Active bystander training

Taking place on Tuesday, 24 June from 9.20am until 13.30pm, this four hour course is designed to help healthcare professionals decide how to intervene if they witness unprofessional behaviour from colleagues.

This course is designed for doctors, dentists, and other healthcare professionals to help develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to act as active bystanders in their workplace.

Being an active bystander is crucial in promoting a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment within healthcare settings, where high-stress situations can sometimes lead to unprofessional behaviour and impact adversely on patient safety, performance and team wellbeing.

The course will include a mix of theoretical insights, skill-building exercises and scenario discussion and content will explore:
the range of problem behaviours which impact adversely on safety, performance and wellbeing
the psychological mechanisms behind the bystander effect
the personal, team, environmental and organisational barriers to taking action
a decision-making model to ensure the most appropriate approach is taken
a set of practical strategies that can be deployed to ensure any intervention is effective, safe and constructive.
the professional and legal responsibilities of healthcare professionals to address unprofessional and inappropriate behaviour

Delegated will leave equipped to make decisions about when, and how, to be an active bystander contributing to a respectful and safe workplace culture.

This course is led by Liz Price, Head of Training , CPD and Risk Advisory Services.

Application has been made to the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK for 4 CPD credits.
