Open FAQs
  • How much would I be indemnified for?

    • MDDUS membership provides unlimited indemnity.  We will not decline to assist a member purely because of cost.
    • Whereas insurance contracts may include excesses, deductibles and limits of indemnity, your MDDUS subscription fee is reinvested to provide certainty that we can support all members in the most ethical way possible.

  • Will my subscription fee increase if I face a claim?

    • No, we do not apply claims-based increases.
    • MDDUS is member-owned, and subscription fees are set to ensure the sustainability of our mutual fund to protect all members.  This means we do not need to pass on costs to individual members.
    • While some insurance premiums may initially appear cheaper, they can be subject to volatile annual increases.

  • What is occurrence-based membership?

    • If you were in membership with MDDUS at the time of an alleged incident you will be eligible to seek assistance, regardless of when an actual claim is brought against you.
    • Clinical negligence claims can be made several months or even years after the alleged incident occurred.  An occurrence-based membership ensures continuous cover for that period, even after your membership has ended.
    • This means that you will have peace of mind that you remain protected, even into your retirement.

  • What is discretionary indemnity?

    • The MDDUS model of discretionary indemnity has ensured the financial and legal security of the dental profession for over 120 years.
    • Unlike an insurance policy, we are not restricted by the terms of a contract.  This gives us greater flexibility to use our discretion to support our members.
    • Rather than apply extensive contractual exclusions, we will use our knowledge and expertise to assess the wider context of a case and find a way we can assist.
    • We assess cases with compassion and a first-hand understanding of the challenges dental professionals face, prioritising fair outcomes for you and your patients.
    • Discretionary indemnity is flexible, reliable and ethical.
