MDDUS has made a series of high-profile appointments to its board of directors, including the senior surgeon to the UK Royal Household.
Professor Iain Cameron has been appointed chair of the board, taking over from Dr Jonathan Berry who steps down after three years.
Prof Cameron is emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynaecology and former dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton.
After graduating in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1980, he underwent postgraduate clinical and research training in Edinburgh, Melbourne and Cambridge. He held the regius chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Glasgow from 1993 and moved to Southampton in 1999.
Iain was chair of the Medical Schools Council from 2013-16 and was a non-executive director of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust from 2011-2017.
Prof Cameron said: “I am proud to take over as chair of MDDUS as it heads towards 2022 and its 120th year of protecting the professional interests of doctors and dentists across the UK.
“Our members are facing the most challenging period that many working in the health services will have experienced. MDDUS is here to support them as they play their individual and collective role in enabling the country to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
MDDUS also appointed two new non-executive directors to its board.
Mr Satyajit (Satya) Bhattacharya, formerly a consultant surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, London, for 22 years and now medical director of The London Clinic. After qualifying as a doctor in Mumbai, he completed his surgical training in London. Satya specialises in surgery of the liver and pancreas and is the Serjeant Surgeon to the Royal Household. Satya has raised close to £1 million over the years for cancer research. He has 75 research papers and book chapters to his name.
Dr Rebecca Sadler, a practising private dentist and a director for dentistry at Portman Healthcare. She qualified with Honours in 1996 from Newcastle University. Following posts in hospital and general practice, she worked for Boots Dentalcare, progressing to a regional senior dentist and clinical teaching in King’s undergraduate programme. In 2006 she established a private practice from scratch which grew to a thriving general and referral practice. Her specialist areas of interest are risk and regulation, policy formulation, contracts, succession planning and clinical leadership.
