A champion for the interests of all of our members, customers and colleagues

Marking Pride Month, MDDUS Director of People and Corporate Services, Kim Johnstone, writes about why we've introduced a dynamic new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy to be a champion for the interests of all of our members, customers and colleagues.

In the month of June, we’re remembering the protests that have developed over the years to become a celebration of Pride for the LGBTQ+ community across the UK and beyond. At MDDUS we recognise the importance of truly being respected for who you are, and we want all of our members, customers, and colleagues to experience that.

Diversity and inclusion for everyone is important to us every month of the year and marking Pride Month in June gives us an opportunity to celebrate our individuality, and come together to share our similarities. Whilst this year we can’t soak up the parades and events that so many of us have enjoyed, we can continue to educate ourselves and celebrate our members and colleagues.

Kim Johnstone Pride Month

We’ve recently updated our MDDUS group diversity and inclusion strategy to support our commitment to being an organisation where people from all backgrounds are welcomed, included, and their contribution is positively encouraged. We know that having diversity amongst colleagues helps to reflect the diversity of our members and customers. And, if colleagues feel safe and able to be their true selves then they will be better placed to support members and customers in their time of need, when they are often at their most vulnerable. At its very core, that is the aim of our strategy – for people to be safe and comfortable to be themselves.

We recognise this isn’t the end of our work to be a fully diverse and inclusive organisation. We have progress to make and we are continuing to learn from the members and customers we support, and the colleagues who work with us. We are listening and we will continue to develop what we do, and how we do it.

We wish our members, customers, and colleagues a very happy Pride month.
